The Hotung Special Fund for Mothers and Infant Protection, Longsheng Guangxi Province, China.
In recent years the women (80,000 around 45,000 of child bearing age) of these minority people have been reluctant give births in hospitals resulting in a high death rate, on average every five days one infant would die.
When H.E. Ambassador Eric Hotung heard of this situation, he kindly donated RMB 1,090,000 to establish a special fund to help them. Later in 2001, H.E. Ambassador Eric Hotung donated another RMB 1,331,800 to set up a mobile clinic to deal with this problems. The whole donation reaches RMB 2,421,800. Up to April 2003, they have helped 1,239 lying-in women give birth at the hospitals and 1,256 babies(649 boys, 607 girls) have safely come to the world. Among them there are 17 pairs of twins. The rate of childbirth at hospital has been raised to 63.34%, an increase of 26.5% compared with 1998. The rate of death infants is 21.91 per thousand, a drop of 21.57% compared with 1998.
Helping the Chinese Ethnic girl students and primary schools in Guangxi and Yanan Provinces, China.
Because of the poverty and the bad habits of regarding men as superior to women, the entrance rate of the minority nationality girls is very low while is dropping out rate very high at Longsheng Country, Guangxi Province. And this has constituted an outstanding problem challenging the development of the national education in the country. According to the statistics, there are only 288 girl students of minority nationality studying at the Longsheng High School, making up only 28.8% of the total number of students of the school. Among the girl students of minority nationality, there are only 85 from countryside including small townships, accounting for 8.5% of the total. To change the situation, the local government started 10 girl classes of minority nationality at the primary school and 5 girl classes of the minority nationality at junior high schools. In order to make the students of the girl classes have a higher education, gradually forming a chain of education from primary school high school then to university. It trained more high-qualified female talents of minority nationality and promotes the improvement of the quality of all the women of minority nationality. The Country government planned to open a senior girl class of minority nationality with 50 students at the only high school of Longsheng Country, but their ambition was challenged by the shortage of educational fund. Right at this critical moment, H.E. Ambassador Eric Hotung came to their help and donated for the 50 girls' tuition fee for 3 years. Finally the class opened on time.
The situation was even worse in the mountain areas high above the sea level in Yunnan Province where the economy was backward. For instance, there are 9 primary schools in the Dali Prefecture, a sub administrate region of the Province, a part of their classrooms had long been out of repair and were in a dangerous state. If they could not be repaired in time, it would threaten the lives of the pupils studying there. It was also H.E. Ambassador Eric Hotung who extended his humanitarian offer to them and helped to repair their classrooms.
A great help to the eye patients, especially those poor eye patients in Beijing.
Beijing is the capital of PRC, yet up to 2001, there was no OCT scanner in any of the hospitals in Beijing. So all of those who need the OCT test must go all the way from Beijing far in the North to Guangzhou in the South. It caused great inconvenience to the eye patients in Beijing, but gave refusal to those who were poor. Then one of the eye patients thought of H.E. Ambassador Eric Hotung, the British philanthropist and came to him for help. As soon as H.E. Ambassador Eric Hotung listened to his advice, he asked his office in Beijing to contact the eye hospital of China Academy of TMC with the result that an OCT scanner room had been established in the Hospital in 2001. To express their thanks, the OCT room was named Eric Hotung OCT room.
