Story Behind the Priceless Vessel
At the end of 1995, the head of the Shanghai Museum, Ma Cheng Yuan, came across a priceless bronze vessel in an antique shop in Hong Kong. On the vessel, were inscriptions that led Ma to deduce that the vessel came from a royal Chinese lineage.

Adamant that the vessel not be lost to the Chinese, Ma started a campaign to rally for funds required to purchase the highly priced piece of history. When H.E. Ambassador Eric Hotung heard of his efforts to preserve a piece of China's history, he made short work of the matter and the vessel soon found its way to the Shanghai Museum.

In 1996, H.E. Ambassador Eric Hotung, a dedicated patron of the preservation of Chinese heritage, donated a large sum of money towards the construction of the "Hotung Pavilion". After its completion, Eric Hotung was invited to personally place the vessel he had salvaged in its new resting place in the pavilion's newly furnished hall.
